Parade update

As you will have seen the work is progressing along the parade, contractors are now beginning to install the street changes that the Council approved in March.

Check out here for full details on what is happening: https://www.transportprojects.org.nz/current/the-parade/

As advised by the council:

The south end (Reef Street to start of the 30km/hr zone) will be done first, then the north end, then the Village.

The first step is the resealing of the centre of the road (the cycle lane does not need resealing). The new centre line and yellow no parking markings that are starting to go in on this newly sealed road surface reflect the changes that Councillors have agreed on to make the area safer. After Easter, the contractors will begin to make the other safety changes, which include the installation of concrete buffers. These buffers will provide greater protection for people riding, and where there is space, something to park next to and unload on to.

While the works are ongoing, the road can certainly appear disjointed and confusing to some road users. Over the coming weeks, as the contractors continue to remove old road markings, install new road markings and infrastructure, the road will look much more cohesive than it currently is, and more pleasant to use.

The changes will take time, and time to get used to, but people should park with care. Like elsewhere in the city, it’s not okay to park on bike lanes or in places where there are yellow lines.

The draft parking management plan is out, feedback on that relates to time restrictions/mobility parks, parking time restrictions on side streets etc, not to the loss of carparks deemed necessary by WCC to improve the safety of the cycle way and access to properties on the parade.

If you want to look at some interactive before and after images of the parking changes they can be viewed at the bottom of this  webpage: https://www.transportprojects.org.nz/current/the-parade/changes-to-car-parking/

There is a working group being established to look at the parade upgrade – this is the upgrade to the area between the roadside kerb and the front of shops: trees/benches/painting etc.  It is not looking at any aspect of the road, cycleway or numbers of car parks.

There is a community drop in on Saturday at the community centre (10am-12, 2-4, 6-7.30pm) where the plans will be laid out and you can ask questions on the detail and provide comments/suggestions on the upgrade to the pavement space that is being worked on.

Cheers

Sheila

WCC Community Drop-in

Kia ora Island Bay Residents Association,

As you will be aware, Wellington City Council will be having a community drop-in session on April 9th to gather ideas and visions to foster the design for the town centre upgrades.

We value your insight and leadership moving forward with the upgrades, and would like to work with a core group that best captures the community’s interests.

Attached you will find our communications seeking representatives for the working group, which will help prioritise and develop the goals and aspirations of the community.

Once the group is confirmed, the first meeting will be Wednesday the 20th April at the Island Bay Community Centre to set a Terms of Reference, review the Drop-In session material, and establish objectives.

Any questions or concerns, please do reach out at this email.

We are looking forward to hearing back with your interest.

25th March 2022 New Chair’s Announcment

Introducing the new committee of the Island Bay Residents Association

Kia Ora Island Bay and Southgate,

Many thanks to all of you who engaged in the recent AGM and the election of your IBRA committee.

Firstly I would like to acknowledge the previous committee for their work over the last 18 months, we hope to continue that progress. And to those who stood for nomination but did not make it on to the committee. A fabulous indication of the number in our community who want to contribute, we hope to harness this willingness to be involved.

Now to introduce the new committee;

Officer roles have been agreed upon between the committee, no voting/election was required.

I, Sheila Hart, will chair the committee until the next AGM in October (and hopefully beyond, but that will be up to you!!). I will be working very closely with Bruce Gadd, immediate past chair so that we can make the most of my fresh enthusiasm and Bruce’s experience, realism, and connections in the community.

The secretary role will be covered by Sonya Cameron, Sally Page, Catherine Inder, and Francesca De Gregorio. This is to share the workload, which we have a bit to get through in the next 6 months. It is a testament to Jane’s hard work (former secretary) that we now have a group taking on that role!

Jelle Keizer will take on the role of treasurer.

All of these roles will be ably supported by the remaining committee members:
Ben Everist
Ruby Ghanem
Mark Henderwood Jeff McDonald
Pat Vinaccia
Chris Wratt

Our first meeting will be on Monday 4th April at St Hilda’s church 7-9pm. The agenda for this meeting will be posted on our website in advance of the meeting.

Acknowledging that the committee is new, the first hour of the meeting will be in committee, this is mainly so we can confirm roles and responsibilities in the committee and decide how we will manage open meetings. The second hour will be open. And, as per the community’s wish, future monthly meetings will be open for anyone to attend.

The open component will be 8-9pm.

If you are attending and have a specific question you want to ask it would be great if you could email it in advance to Islandbayres@gmail.com.

I look forward to working with the community of Island Bay and Southgate.

If you have any questions or queries please do get in touch

Cheers
Sheila
