Wellington City Council approved its draft budget for 2023/24 on 28 February, which includes a proposed 12.3% rates rise. This works out to an average of $8 per household per week and would apply from 1 July 2023.
The budget prioritises continued investment in essential infrastructure, resilience and climate action – areas Wellingtonians said were most important in the city’s 10-year plan – and ensuring the city is ready for forecast growth of 50-80,000 new residents by 2050.

The public can provide their perspectives on the draft annual plan between 27 March and 30 April, either by visiting the engagement platform or filling out a hard copy at the libraries, Service Centre and community centres. It will then be debated and adopted by the Council in June.
